Celebrity Endorsements in Ghana: Are celebrities Accountable to their Brands? Using Menzgold as a case

Before we sweep it under the carpet as usual, since there's a new case on board let me attempt this.

Friday morning, on my way to work in a 207 trotro chocked at the corner and I am  looking at Billboards on the road. I love ads, I love billboards, I love digital marketing. Something just crossed my mind. Are Celebrities in Ghana acountable to their brand?

In a country with a weak royalties and copyrights regime (umusiconline was tackling this issue so I know what I am talking about), product endorsement is more straightforward a revenue stream for celebrities. Sometimes these endorsements work out so well that, for years, we cannot help but remember both the product and the celebrity in the same breath. A personal favourite is David Dontoh’s “He is a good Samaritan, that is all” advert for the National Lottery Authority from the mid-90s. Also, it is difficult to forget the Key Soap ‘Medɔfo pa’ advert featuring Kofi Middleton Mends. The legendary comedian, Super OD also featured in a funny Carnation Tea Creamer advert some years ago. These examples show a particular kind of endorsement: one in which the celebrity acts in a TV commercial (or for that matter, a radio commercial).

The arrangement may be seen as simple: you lend your face and voice in support of a product and you get paid. It is really not that simple as it is more of a reputation and legitimation question. Once you decide to use your image to support a brand, you are also putting your reputation on the line. You are telling the general public that; ‘you know me… trust me, this is a good product’. This means that celebrities must never see endorsements as just another avenue for quick/easy cash. There is more to it. It is a risk that must be accepted carefully. A risk that could end one’s career or if you are lucky, just dent your bankability.

Over time, I see an evolution in the endorsement business in Ghana. This was particularly intensified by the corporate rivalry in our telecommunications industry, I suspect. We moved from the days where Mikki Osei Berko (aka Master Richard) acted in the “Megyina abɔnten na merekasa” commercial to the Globacom endorsement deals for Ghanaian celebrities like Paapa Yankson, Becca, Tinny, Wutah, Jackie Appiah and Reggie Rockstone. Samini and later, Okyeame Kwame signed with MTN. At this time (from the late 2000s) we saw the kind of endorsement deal that sought to get celebrities more attached to the product. Thus it was now not only a matter of ‘I have acted in their commercial’ or ‘I have my face on their billboard’ but it had become more of a commitment to represent the brand and its values around the clock – brand ambassador properly so-called. Globacom endorsers were not to play on MTN-sponsored shows for instance.

This beyond-the-advert kind of endorsement was seen with Menzgold too. There were celebrities who took to Youtube and other outlets to market Menzgold. Some of these celebrities were signed by Zylofon Media – the creative arts wing of the ‘Menzgold empire’ There were others who were not officially affiliated to Menzgold but still publicly promoted the outfit’s operations. Now that Menzgold has been exposed for what it really was, there needs to be a deep conversation about the celebrity endorsements it came with.

It is very viable for a Menzgold customer to suggest that his/her decision to patronize Menzgold was based on the legitimacy granted by the explicit pronouncements of these celebrities. After all, that was what these celebrity endorsements were meant for. So why won’t these endorsers speak up? It will not bring customers their monies but it is the ethical thing to do.  It shows respect for their brand and their fans.

Such celebrity responsibility and accountability is both in the personal interest of the celebrities and then, the endorsement industry in Ghana. We need credible and reflective celebrities. Those are the ones whose endorsements we can trust. Those are the ones we can believe have the wellbeing of their fans at heart. Those are the ones who value their brand and image more than their pockets. If these celebrities do not exercise some sense of responsibility, we cannot continue to trust their present and future endorsements. If we cannot trust them, then corporations will soon have to part ways with such celebrities. These celebrities then will lose out but more worryingly; it could eventually lead to a situation where celebrity endorsement as an industry in Ghana collapses for good.

Importantly, the argument here is not only about the Menzgold debacle but also about a culture in which certain persons accept fat cheques and forget about larger responsibilities to their fans and the general public. In fact, if our celebrities place personal image and public interest ahead of private pocket, they will understand the need to fully research products before endorsing them. Also, then they will be ready to openly de-link from a product where it is clear that the product or its makers are undermining human values and public interest. Maybe we should just be asking the question: what are the values and ethics of our celebrities? The inverse also applies: where our celebrities disregard ethics, social values and public interest concerns, corporations have the responsibility of ‘cancelling’ them.

The public must never be taken for granted as it makes both the corporation and the celebrity. This is not a special request. It is about keeping high standards and respect as is down elsewhere. When H&M presented a racist advert, celebrities like The Weeknd and G-Eazy parted ways with the clothing outfit. This is what The Weeknd said: “… shocked and embarrassed by this photo. I’m deeply offended and will not be working with H&M any more”. G-Eazy added: “I can’t allow for my name and brand to be associated with a company that could let this happen.”

This is self-respect and respect for those you influence. This is accountability.

Some practical ways of getting closer to God this year

These are thoughts on things to start doing to change your life that would help us get closer to God😊

Jam 4:8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind.

Songs

Start listening to Christian hip hop(if you were into hiphop), R&B, worship, or gospel music more often. Clean music will affect your mood, your spirit, your thoughts, and language in a Holy and pure way

Prayer

Pray the second you get irritated or angry. It’s calming and it helps work on the ability to be slow to anger. Instantly you give the situation to God.

Temptation

Don’t put yourself in a tempting situation. The temptation is harder to flee when you put yourself right in the middle. Don’t be alone with a guy/girl, don’t go to that party, don’t go to that smoke session

The Word

Read your Bible daily. Start a bible streak with yourself and try not to lose it. The Bible should be your daily bread. I recommend reading Matt-John and then Galatians - 2 Peter for a good heart change

Friends

Surround yourself with Godly people who want to see you do better and go deeper in your walk with Christ.

Pray (Pray again).

I say this all the time. Persevere through prayer. Spend quality time with God in your quiet place. Make it a priority to know Him more intimately.

Social Media

Get rid of temptations on social media. Unfollow all porn/sex pages, all alcohol, and ungodly music pages, etc etc. anything unclean and unholy.

Fast.

Well, this is a difficult one.
Fast from social media, secular music, movies, YouTube, whatever. And replace what you fasted with time with God. Be intentional with your fast.

Make God the center of your life and change out of obedience and love for Him

A word of encouragement:

stand out, don’t fit in. God made us to shine His bright light in this dark world. Don’t become of this world and remember to whom you belong.

Birthday Reflection: Man on a Journey

Birthday, A time for reflection into the past and present.

My favourite birthday has always been my 5th Birthday until my 21st Birthday. On my 5th Birthday, my mother organised a Birthday party for me, all the Children in the neighbourhood attended and most importantly it was the first time someone(our age group) had organised a birthday party. I felt special from that day and it is the reason I am always special. A birthday party In a middle class community in Nsawam 18 years ago created an impression on me.

21, this is now my best Birthday celebration yet. My sister organised a small drinkup, we invited some close "new friends" we've got since we were new Mampong. I Introduced the idea of Hope Journey to people outside my family for the first time, this was supposed to be an event but now Hope Journey is The Hope Journey.

Reflection.

Education, recent years have thought me a lot about school and God's plan.

My path towards higher educational has been interesting; I started school in Nana Osae Djan in Nsawam where I got to meet the best friends I have in life now, they're considered family to me because of so many reasons; the love we show, kindness and caring we are towards each other.

I was lucky,  I attended the Best Senior High school as at the time we were selecting our Senior High Schools; I got admission to the Presec. This had a great impression on me, most teachers in my Junior High School thought I wouldn't get and I didn't deserve it but I still managed to get it. I learnt one major lesson; Everything is possible just believe in yourself. My Senior High School  Friends were mostly people who were intellectuals and they were not spiritual, I lost most of them when I became a staunch Christian.

After Presec I naively selected a less popular university college in a form of an institute due to the gains, I could do any course I love and I was on Scholarship. At Data Link, I proved  to be more intellectual than most of the course mates, people hated me because of that but others loved me because of that too, I formed my first company in College; umusiconline, a music streaming website which was way before its time, a creative hub called Iredylabs and Hope Journey, although I got a degree in college I think that's not why I went to university, I actually found my life's purpose in College. I discovered what I loved most and what I could do to impact on lives; but university thought me a lot of painful lessons( I am still writing an article on this).

The entrepreneur, I love Business. I love creating things. I love making impact. All my life I have always wanted to create something giant, something people can point to and something great. My mum introduced me to selling when I was young, we had a table top stall where we sell gari and yam back then in Nsawam, I loved telling people about why they should buy the types of yam and the gari when they approached I didn't know that was marketing back then but I have carried it along with me till today. I now create brand identities and sell brands online.

I created my first company in Presec, Kwansa house. Gic, this was supposed to sell for people who were shy or felt lazy to move from one room to the other to sell something so we sold on their behalf. I moved from  room to room in the boarding house to sell school paraphernalia, food stuff, stationery and other items. I learnt real salesmanship during this experience.

Umusiconline, I love music, we had friends who were upcoming musicians and could not hype their music so my  long time childhood friend, Ebo and I created undatrax during our time after the wassce, I learnt a lot about music distribution during this period, I met some now popular musicians during this period, Kwesi Arthur, Jay Yeyo and Wisa, etc. With the undatrax experience my college friends and I decided to publish a class presentation which was supposed to be an itunes with streaming capabilities, called undatrax shop.

Osei and I created a new brand called Umusiconline we had 50 musicians on it, sold over 500 songs and we had challenges with storage so we had to get investors. We ended up selling majority shares of Umusiconline and we closed it down in 2017 after I became a more staunch Christian. I felt Umusiconline promotes ungodly music.

I learnt real business life at Umusiconline, how an Internet company should run and what makes a Startup, a company. It was a crazy venture,  I skipped lectures and traded my school fees with the dream and I almost didn't graduate!  But it was worth it, I carried the lessons learnt from Umusiconline to iRedylabs and Hope Journey and through that God has made Hope Journey great in just 2 years.

Christ and Hope Journey.

Hope Journey is my testimony and a 'thank you' to God for saving me. I was born into the Church but I wasn't a Christian. In 2011, I was just a Church boy going to church because on Sundays you've to go to Church. It was at that time I decided not to go to Church again because I wasn't staying with my parents since we've been transferred from Nsawam to Adukrom and due to my education I had to be in Nsawam until I complete my Junior High  before I join the family in Adukrom. I didn't know the meaning of what I was doing.

At Presec, I got confused about Christianity, people made it scary and something it wasn't they made it look like waste of everyone's time, the more intellectuals didn't want to get involved because of how they treated it.

Later on before  university I experimented  with other religious beliefs until I realised the true way, Christ. Jesus is the only way, I accepted Christ properly in 2014 and I have decided to pick up the cross and follow him (my confirmation text). I learnt one thing after the first Hope Journey, that is the sweet fellowship in interdenominational gathering. You get to do more if you're from different churches since we are binded by Christ's Love and not bound to doctrines.

Hope Journey is the focus of my Adult life, I wish to do more great things for God. I wish to Make poor people smile, I want to leave a great legacy and I want the best place in Heaven. God is Real, Jesus is not a folklore. Belive in Him that's the only way. Thanks for the Birthday wishes.

Keynote Address by Isaac Kwame Owusu at Akwakupomu Hope Journey Xmas with a Village

Afrikyiapa,

We thank God, I want to thank Nana Amankrado and the people of Akwakupomu, the Pastors of the Various Churches of Akwakupomu, and everyone here for this wonderful atmosphere.

I must say God will be glad about how we've raised his name today on a special occasion like this. I am personally Happy once again I want to say thank you.

I am here today to do three things after that I will sit down for the event to continue.

1. Introduction
2. Reason we are here
3. The Word.

We are Hope Journey, a christ centered youth charity. We visit people in rural areas to share the word of God with them, introduce christ to people who don't know him and we also show christ's love through donations.

2. Our main reason we are here today is to celebrate christ's birth with the people of Akwakupomu especially our younger brothers and sisters through activities like mentoring session, distribution of school bags and free health screening for our mothers and fathers.

The Word.

Now that we know who we are and why we are here I want to share this short message with all of us here.

And the theme of this event is simple.

The Gift of Salvation. John 3:16

And I read

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Let's add the 17

For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

This verse is exciting.

It says

For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

Now let me tell you a story.

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

And through his 7 day activity of creating the universe he created man in his own image. He saw it was perfect and he blessed it.

He made man precede over all the creation and that he could eat everything in the Garden expect  the fruit of good and evil. Man didn't listen to God and he was deceived by Satan who came to man in a form of serpent.

Man continued sinning,  and the world was without peace so God sent his only son to come into this world to save us. Into a world full of wicked  people. Ei human beings are dangerous o. God took a very serious risk by sending his son, his son Jesus, the Christ.
He preached for 3yrs and  he was preaching same message of John 3:16.

Now why did God send his son?

1. How humans have problem.

Do you know something has separated us from God.

We are not able to enjoy life and fellowship with God as we should because our sins have brought wide separation between us and God. As the bible says in Romans 3:23

since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

2. Jesus was the Answer.

Do you know Jesus Christ died for our sins?

God has given the answer to our problems in Jesus Christ. He died on the Cross and rose from the dead to give us eternal life. He paid the penalty for our sins.

Bible says in 1 peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in His body on the tree ( Cross), so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness; by wounds you have been healed.

And confirms in 1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the Christ Jesus.

By now someone is asking so what do I do?

There's the need to receive christ.

If you accept christ and receive him by faith.

Bible says in John 1:12 that;

...To all who received Him, to those who believed in His Name, he gave the right to become children of God.

That is Declaring openly that you accept you're a sinner, and you believe Christ died on the cross for our sins and rose again.  And that Christ should take full control of your life and make it his forever!

Today we here inviting you to Christ who is the reason for this season of Christmas. We don't have any other Hope here in these end times the only Hope we brought here is Jesus Christ!

Amen.

Song( I surrender all)

And Altar Calls.
